I'm almost dressed for the role....

So I told everyone on Sunday about my lacy mitts....I really love these things....and I feel almost as if I could step into a Jane Austen novel...

Why, yes, Mr. Darcy I would love to dance.....**swoon...Mr. Darcy**

Captain Wentworth, nice to see you again.....

They are made with Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino...so really soft!  I actually found the pattern on a Jane Austen site...

So what else did people make this week:  Check these out...here, here and here (no link yet)

Still Plugging Away

at the Age of Brass and Steam....
There is really only two more sections, but I have a ton of yarn left, so I'm going to add a section or two....we'll see....

My classroom is maybe 75% done...was there until 7 last night....I have a workshop all day today, so will go back after 3.....we have a Welcome Back breakfast on Thursday and our rooms are suppose to be done by then....yeah..it'll be "mostly done."

What am I reading?  I'm a fan of the Longmire television series, so I just downloaded the first book that it is based on....

I hope everyone has a spectacular day!!!!!!

Please visit for more projects:  None of the links are up yet......and I have to go....

10,000 Miles

When I went to get my oil changed last week.....the guy said I had put almost 10,000 miles on my car this summer....I had my oil changed before I had left on the first trip.  Here is a map of the states I either drove through or actually visited this summer....

visited 23 states (46%)
Create your own visited map of The United States or another interesting project

The Hubs asked me on Sunday if I wanted to do anything, as it was my last day....I said, "Not really...I traveled a lot this summer."  I was pretty content with knitting and crocheting the day away...

Year of projects: week 34

Good Morning and welcome to my Year of Projects update!  This week I have been working on my classroom, so didn't do a lot of crafting....cuz when I got home I was EXHAUSTED!  But I did get caught up on my Age of Brass and Steam....it is now back to where it was before I frogged it.  There were just too many mistakes....I also made a pair of lacy mitts for a Nerd Wars challenge....which I will show on Friday.  I'm loving them!

This is what I have been doing this week...
I moved to a new grade level and a new classroom.....my first 10 years of teaching I was in the same room (I even changed grade levels)  The last 6 years..I have moved 4 times......

FO Friday: Ice Cream Cozy

This was in answer to a Nerd Wars challenge:

Discovery: To mark the 100th anniversary this year of Kamerlingh Onnes’s Nobel prize, honouring his pioneering work in the field of low-temperature physics, we would like you to craft something inspired by, or related to, the science or technology of things getting cold.

One of the acceptable things was to use refrigeration and the results of refrigeration....and my favorite result of refrigeration is ICE CREAM!!!  We always have some kind of ice cream in the house... and when I pull out a pint to nosh on, I always wrap a kitchen towel around the carton...well no more!

I actually made two, but only had one carton of ice cream....in trying to use up the yarn, I also made a coaster, which is now on my desk at school....

I purposely chose the yarn for the reminder of Neapolitan ice cream...a favorite from childhood birthday parties...I tied it to my nerdery: Stargate from a season 6 episode when the guys are eating ice cream in the Prometheus...

ETA: to add link to pattern...not my pattern...found through Ravelry...Ice Cream Cozy

So what did you finish?  Please join everyone over at Tami's, Creative Suburbia and Wisdom Begins in Wonder

Video Thursday

I kept hearing this song on the radio and thought it was very cool....well last week the DJ said it was Anna Kendricks...I knew she was an actress, so I looked it up....I have not seen Pitch Perfect, so was not familiar with it....whilst watching the video..the Hubs comes in and says I love this song!  So I'm sure you are familiar with the song, the video is pretty cool too....

Then we watched a cool video of her performing the song on David Letterman.....

Enjoy your Thursday....

WIP Wednesday and Yarn Along

This week there has not been much crafting...there has been much cleaning and unpacking of the classroom...and I am exhausted when I get home....but I am still plugging away at my Age of Brass and Steam...it is much smaller than last week, as I had to rip it back to a mistake in the first section...and then I just ended up restarting it....

One thing I did do was wind some yarn in anticipation of some upcoming projects....
From left to right: RhinoFluff in Deep Sea, it will become Holden Shawlette                              Wollmeise in No Whale Watching in Colorado destined to be a Wingspan
OceanWind Knits in Thyme, maybe a hat, not sure yet
Bottom Row: Manos Del Uruguay Alegria destined for Waves of Love (maybe)
Mad Color Malcolm Reynolds Widow will be Out of Gas
Ball and Skein Squash Blossom, was going to be a shawl, not sure yet
Ball and Skein Manise, originally wound for Waves of Love, not sure now..

The Ball and Skein in Squash Blossom was going to be a shawl....but a free sock pattern was published today, so it may become them....

I see many socks are being blogged about today...and I have so many socks on the needles, I need to finish.....so maybe I'm becoming a shawl knitter instead?????

For books, I finished the WOOL series on Sunday...the  last installment was published on Saturday...and I pretty much read most of the day Saturday and Sunday....it was so good!!!!

Join us at Tami's to see what else people are working on...

World Photography Day

When I logged on yesterday, Bing informed me that it was World Photography Day....as I planned on spending my day unpacking my classroom, I couldn't go and take amazing photographs....so I took some of my ordinary day...

Early morning bees buzzing in a sunflower

The work of the day

My car windshield being replaced (for the second time)

The Hubs painting the porch steps....

This was my day.....

WIP Blog Hop

So I decided to join this crazy WIP Blog Hop....go here if you'd like to join...the goal is to finish a WIP or multiple WIPs in 30 days...whatever your list includes.....since Nerd Wars is winding down and we have an off month, this will fill that month and I'll get some WIPs done...uhm..maybe...

WIP List:

1. Really Big Bag.....this is a stash buster....I need to crochet several more round, a strap..and then I plan on felting it....it is much wider than tall..so I'm thinking of crocheting it down the middle and creating two pockets instead of the one huge one....

2. Hermione's Everyday Socks....or the

3. Adele Socks...I've been off my sock kick..but I think these have the best chance of possibly being finished...(I'm on the first sock with both, about turning the heel)

I will finish a few other projects, as my Nerd Wars wraps up...

4.  The Age of Brass and Steam
5.  The 8 Hat

Today starts the unpacking of the classroom and it'll take many, many days....I am moving classrooms and grade levels....and next Monday starts the teacher workshops...and the students come back on Sept 3....so a busy couple of weeks coming up for me...

Sunday, August 18, 2013

YOP: Week 33

Another week...and four more projects done....I finished my Cedar Leaf Shawlette, my Spring Buds hat, an eyeglass case for the Hubs and a charity hat to donate. These were all blogged about on Friday...

Since then I have been working on my Age of Brass and Steam.....

But I realized some mistakes I made and ripped it back to the first section....so starting over on it...it's actually a pretty easy pattern...I just read it wrong....

I also wound 6 skeins of yarn yesterday in anticipation of upcoming projects.....although I won't have much more time with school starting soon....

Hank of Yarn in Southaven, MS

Hank of Yarn
So this is the last of the yarn shops I visited this summer....we were on our way to Memphis to visit a friend, on our way home from Texas....this shop was right off the highway....so convenient!

The owner was not there, but I did get permission to take photos....very friendly shop...but most places in the South are friendly....I loved the signs on the wall....

There were three sitting areas set up....it was bright and airy....

I saw this pattern...
and knew I had it queued...Autumn in Garrison...I loved the yarn that they did it in..so I bought a couple of hanks...Fibre Co. Terra in Black Locust Bark

I loved this big trunk in the front filled with sale yarns...
They had lots of project samples...even some I've not seen in other stores, like can cozies...
As I said, convenient for a hop off, hop on the highway stop...

FO: Cedar Leaf Shawlette

I love, love, love this and will wear it a lot!

In the last picture, you can see the subtle difference in color in the the leaves.  The top set of leaves are from the second skein...

I have a couple other finishes this week:
My Spring Buds:  The yarn is linen and rayon and is very drapey, but I like that look, so it'll work for me!

While working on the Spring Buds on Wednesday, the Hubs came in and demanded I make him an eyeglass case...

It's made with Moda Dea Washable Wool.  It's pretty squishy..

And I finished another charity hat:
So what did you make this week?

Yarn Along and WIPing Wednesday

Yesterday I read, no crafting....I had seen a book in a friend's picture on Facebook, it intrigued me, as it was called WOOL ..well that looked interesting!  And it was, although it's not about wool from any animals (although one character does knit).  It's a post-apocalyptic book....love these kinds of books!  Anyway I purchased it and downloaded it..and the Hubs read it..and said it was fantastic..and I'd really like it...and then my July hit!  The third book comes out on Saturday, so started it yesterday...so far..so good...

As for the crafting....after finishing the Cedar Leaf Shawlette...I decided to start another "shawl" from my queue....I've queue'd quite a few....but I had bought Madelintosh Light in Steam Age, specifically for The Age of Brass and Steam (how could I not?)...I'm loving it!

Then a hat for donation to school...

Then a hat (same as last week) for a Nerd Wars challenge, in Nerd Girls Trifecta...

Then my Spring Buds hat...it is made with CEY Firefly, which is rayon and linen...it will be very drapy..maybe not the best for the hat to show off the buds, but I will like the slouch!

The projects:

So I'm all about the hats and shawls this week....but do need to get back to the socks....they keep yelling at me from their respective bags...I've got 4 in process and another pair that needs some adjustments....and I just joined SuperSockScareFest

Park Avenue Yarns in Texas

In between dealing with all the things that need to be done when someone dies, I took time to meet up with a friend.  Denise and I have been playing on the same Nerd Wars team for a couple of years.  She has had some life events happen recently and moved from the Chicago area to Texas....she is now moving back north for a bit...but it was great that I was able to meet up with her while in Texas....

She suggested her favorite yarn shop, Park Avenue Yarns in League City, Texas.  It was about an hour from where I was staying....and it was just what I needed among all the sadness....

While perusing the store, waiting for Denise, I stumbled across this square of yarn...
It was the yarn for a pattern that I had decided I NEEDED a couple of months ago!!!!  But have not been able to find...I even took a picture of the pattern on my cell phone, so I carried it with me everywhere...It's called Twin Peaks.  Without much hope, I leafed through the pattern books...and OMG!!!  They had the book!  I've seen the yarn in other stores, but never the pattern!!!  So I snatched the book up and the four skeins of that white yarn you see there...(the pattern calls for 5, but I am short! and they only had 4.) I am thrilled with finally finding this!

Then I checked out the display of Never Not Knitting patterns with accompanying yarns...
And ended up with two more of Alana's patterns!  I have her Botanical Knits, Her Coastal Knitting and several single patterns...Her Seedling was my first completed knit pattern...and she is the designer of the just finished Cedar Leaf Shawlette...suffice to say, I love her stuff!

There was another display I loved!!!!!
So I left with some yarn and some patterns and a good friend....
If I lived closer, I would definitely frequent this shop!  The displays are fantastic...the yarns are great...I really enjoyed this shop!

We had lunch after leaving at a cute little tea shop down the road...The Holly Berry Tea Room.  It was yummy!

Ouch Again and Woo-Hoo!

I finished my Cedar Leaf Shawlette, and I soaked it and then pinned it out...and while doing that I pulled a muscle in my back...so much pain!!!!!

I have some pain meds from a previous injury...so taking those...and resting...but the advice is only to rest a day or two.....it really hurts when I move....but not standing or walking.....so going from sitting to standing...etc....

so I am going to take today to rest it up..enjoy the meds...and do some more crafting...made some gains on my Spring Buds hat yesterday.....should be able to finish it up....I know..

pain meds = mistakes.....let's hope not!

YOP: Week 32 or Week 27????

Since I have not posted a YOP since June 30...is this week 27 or is it week 32????

Yesterday I had to take an unexpected trip to WEBS, as I ran out of the yarn for my Cedar Leaf Shawlette...and since I bought the original skein there...it is Madelinetosh Pashmina, so no dye lots...but I hoped to match it as best as I could....and I looked on the website to see if they had it..it listed 3 skeins...however when I got there, they did not have that color in Pashmina in the store (the website lists the warehouse)  But there were these "One of a Kind" skeins that looked like Norway Spruce, so I matched the best one....so far so good,,,,this skein is slightly darker, but since it's the leaf edging, you really can't tell the difference....I just wonder why they are now "One of a Kind" and not the original name????  I have 9 leaves to go...woo-hoo!

My focus this week has been the shawlette, as it is my dissertation....so I need to finish it...I also bought season 7 of Supernatural...and will watch that as I complete the leaves today...I can do about 3-4 before I need to take a break...

I also added 4 hats to my completed list....I made A LOT of hats...they are quick and easy....

I started to work on The Age of Brass and Steam, when I ran out of yarn for the CLS, but needed smaller needles...I got those yesterday too...so I can work on that...

I'm also struggling with my Breath of Fresh Air scarf
I didn't like the way it is pooling..there is that big blotch...I don't mind pooling normally, but...it also shows how tight my gauge was at the beginning..and maybe I loosened up?  I started working on this when I first started knitting in 2011....

So I ripped it out to the even rows and tried to knit in a tighter gauge...but I think now, the yarn is too crinkly...
Can you see the last two rows are still not as even as the previous....so rip it all out?  Maybe try a different pattern with this yarn? I'm proud that the beginning rows look so good....

The one yarn store that I have not blogged about from my trip was Loopy Yarns in Chicago.  The nephew and I went to Chicago, and we visited the home of deep-dish pizza and a yarn store...and then we left....so we didn't see much of Chicago....

Loopy Yarns was very similar to stores in Manhattan, the boutique yarn store feeling....it was smaller, but had a basement...that was cool....the employees were friendly...but the nephew was rushing me through the store...so I was trying to shop fairly quickly...if I'm ever back in Chicago, I will give it another peruse...

I loved the little sitting area....and actually had Wilkey take a seat for a photo....I ended up buying some of the yarn in the last shot....

The nephew picked out some yarn, Cascade Yarns 220....so I made him a hat with it....
and I picked up the Freia yarn, which I so love!!!!

Finished Objects Friday

Haven't done one of these in awhile!

I am still working on my Cedar Leaf Shawlette and have spent the majority of the past 2-3 days on it..I have 16 more leaves to do, then finishing...today I left the house for the first time since I came home on Saturday...and actually got in a car...but it was only to go have lunch...although tomorrow I may head down to an LYS by the shore, as there is a visiting show there.....it's about an hour away....my body just shudders at the thought of being in my car for an hour....

But I do have those two hats I talked about earlier in the week.....they were both made with yarn that was sent to mt by Schachenmayr Yarn as part of their promotion for this new line of yarn....the contest runs till the end of the month, but the deadline to request yarn was today.

I requested some yarn colors, but the first yarn that was sent to me were total neutrals:
I thought the yarn would be scratchy, but it was very soft and easy to work with...I'd try other colors in this yarn..It is 70% acrylic and 30% New Wool.  Since the colors are so neutral, I went with a simple beanie style hat....

I did it brim up and made a more stretchy brim by crocheting into the back loops only....I crocheted this in my car on the way home, on one of the days that my brother did all of the driving.  I actually like it quite a bit....

When I got home, surprise, I had another skein of yarn waiting...
Obviously chunky, 100% acrylic.  It was fun to work with, but did take a toll on the hands, being so chunky.  I had an idea...and I only think it worked out partially...I wanted to make an open hat, that could be converted to a cowl....I crocheted into the back loops to give it a raised edge and alternated between half double crochet and double crochet....The hat is a bit big....and I would have liked to add another row or two, but ran out of yarn...I like the way it looks, but I just prefer my hats to come down a bit further on my head....if they were to ask me for the pattern, I would have to adjust the size...

but, as a cowl, it works well and will be very warm!!!!!
There is a tie at the top of the hat, that ties it closed when it is a hat, and that you can open to use as a cowl.....

So those are my two entries for the contest....

Please go check out these other places for more finished objects..
